👨🍳 Instructions
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and melt the butter until it begins to foam slightly.
Place the bread slice in the skillet and toast both sides until lightly golden and crisp.
Pour the milk directly into the skillet around the bread. Let the bread absorb the milk for 1–2 minutes until soft and soaked through.
Sprinkle the sugar evenly over the bread. Let it caramelize with the remaining milk and butter to form a sweet, golden crust.
Once the liquid is almost gone and the bread is golden brown and caramelized, remove from heat immediately.

⚠️ Common Mistakes
- ✕
Overcooking: Once the milk is absorbed, remove from heat quickly. Too long on the stove will turn the bread mushy or burn the sugar.
- ✕
High Heat: Watch the sugar carefully — it can go from caramelized to burnt in seconds.
🔄 Variations
Cinnamon Version: Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon powder along with the sugar for a warm, spiced flavor.
Gourmet Touch: Drizzle with honey and top with fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries) before serving.
🧊 Storage
- 📦
This dessert is best enjoyed immediately while hot to appreciate the contrast between the caramelized crust and the soft, custardy center.
💡 Chef Tips
Thick Bread is Best: Use a thick, fluffy bread like shokupan or brioche that can absorb the milk without falling apart.
Cream Over Butter: Using heavy cream instead of butter creates a richer, silkier texture and deeper flavor.
