π¨βπ³ Instructions
Wash, peel, and trim both ends off the parsnips. Cut away any tough core if the parsnip is very large.
Cut the parsnips into long, thick rectangular wedges that your baby can easily grasp with a palmar grip.
Place a steamer basket over boiling water in a saucepan, add the parsnip wedges, and cover with a lid.
Steam for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the wedges are completely fork-tender and yield easily to pressure.
Remove from heat and allow them to cool down completely to a lukewarm temperature before serving.
Test a piece by pressing it between your thumb and index finger to ensure it squashes effortlessly.
β οΈ Common Mistakes
- β
Under-steaming the parsnips so that they remain hard and fibrous, which can cause gagging or frustration.
- β
Serving them while still hot on the inside; always check the temperature before offering.
π Variations
Spiced Parsnip: Toss the warm steamed wedges in a tiny pinch of ground cumin or mild curry powder for an aromatic twist.
Olive Oil Touch: Drizzle a tiny drop of extra-virgin olive oil over the warm wedges to add beneficial healthy fats.
π§ Storage
- π¦
Fridge: Store leftover steamed parsnip wedges in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- π¦
Freezer: Can be frozen for up to 1 month. Reheat by steaming or microwaving until warm and fully softened.
π‘ Chef Tips
Parsnips naturally caramelize and sweeten when cooked, making them a delicious vehicle for introducing new vegetables to your baby's palate.
If the cooked wedges feel too slippery in your baby's hands, roll them lightly in fine baby oat cereal or hemp seeds to provide traction.
