👨🍳 Instructions
Wash, peel, and remove the seeds and fibrous pulp from the squash.
Slice the squash into thick, rectangular wedges (about the size and shape of an adult finger) to make it easy for your baby to grasp.
Place a steamer basket over boiling water in a saucepan, add the squash wedges, and cover.
Steam for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the wedges are very tender but still hold their shape. They should mash easily between your thumb and index finger.
Let them cool completely before serving, ensuring they are at a safe, lukewarm temperature.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- ✕
Over-steaming until the squash turns to mush, making it difficult for the baby to hold onto without it falling apart instantly.
- ✕
Serving chunks that are too small, which can be difficult for a 6-month-old to pick up using their whole-hand "palmar grasp." Always aim for finger-sized wedges.
🔄 Variations
Spiced Wedges: Dust the steamed wedges with a tiny whisper of ground cinnamon or ginger before serving.
Healthy Fat Drizzle: Drizzle with a few drops of extra-virgin olive oil to increase the calorie density and aid nutrient absorption.
🧊 Storage
- 📦
Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- 📦
Freezer: Can be frozen in portions for up to 1 month. Thaw in the refrigerator before gently reheating.
💡 Chef Tips
The skin can be left on if you prefer, but peeling is often easier for beginners to manage.
If the wedges feel too slippery for your baby to hold, you can roll them in a tiny bit of hemp seeds or oat flour to provide a better grip.
