Steamed Apple Sticks
By the QuiteRecipes team (Jamy & KaΓ―na) | Food Service Professional, Early Childhood Expert & Parents
Learn how to prepare soft, steamed apple sticks safely for babies starting solid foods. A gentle, sweet, and graspable BLW fruit option.
Raw apples are a serious choking risk for infants, which is why we steam them until tender. Steamed apple sticks keep a shape made for tiny grips while turning completely mashable. A safe way to serve a classic fruit.

π¨βπ³ Instructions
Wash, peel, and core the apples completely.
Cut the apples into long, rectangular sticks (roughly the size of an adult's index finger) that your baby can easily grab with a palmar grasp.
Place a steamer basket over boiling water in a saucepan, add the apple sticks, and cover with a tight-fitting lid.
Steam for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the sticks are fork-tender and yield effortlessly to gentle pressure.
Remove from heat and allow them to cool down completely to a lukewarm temperature before serving.
Test a piece by pressing it between your thumb and index finger to make sure it squashes easily.
β οΈ Common Mistakes
- β
Serving raw, crisp apple slices, which pose a severe choking hazard for infants.
- β
Under-steaming the apples so that the core remains firm and rigid.
π Variations
Cinnamon Spiced: Dust the warm apple sticks with a tiny pinch of ground cinnamon for a comforting flavor boost.
Vanilla Hint: Add a tiny drop of pure vanilla extract to the steaming water to infuse a subtle aroma into the fruit.
π§ Storage
- π¦
Fridge: Store leftover steamed apple sticks in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- π¦
Freezer: Freezing alters the cell structure of apples and makes them overly mushy upon thawing, so fresh preparation is recommended.
π‘ Chef Tips
Peeling the apples is essential for young babies at 6 months old, as tough skin can be difficult to chew or swallow.
If the steamed apple sticks become too slippery for your baby to hold onto, roll them gently in fine baby oat cereal or hemp hearts for instant traction.
β FAQ
Why cut them into sticks instead of rounds? Long rectangular sticks are much easier for a 6-month-old to hold and allow them to bite off small pieces safely, whereas round slices can block an airway.
How do I know they are soft enough? You should be able to press your thumb through an apple stick with very little resistance.
Can I use tart apples? Sweeter varieties like Gala or Fuji are generally better received by babies, as very tart apples can cause a strong sour reaction.
