By the QuiteRecipes team (Jamy & Kaïna) | Food Service Professional, Early Childhood Expert & Parents
Learn how to prepare soft, steamed broccoli florets safely for babies starting solid foods. A nutrient-dense, graspable BLW vegetable option.
Broccoli florets are one of the most iconic and popular foods for Baby-Led Weaning (BLW). Their natural "tree-like" shape provides an exceptional built-in handle for tiny hands to grasp, while steaming them until they are very soft ensures they are completely safe and easy for an infant to gum and consume.

👨🍳 Instructions
Wash the broccoli crown thoroughly and cut it into individual florets, keeping a short piece of the stem on each piece to act as a natural handle.
Place a steamer basket over boiling water in a saucepan, add the broccoli florets, and cover with a lid.
Steam for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the stems are tender enough to be easily pierced with a fork and the florets are soft.
Remove from heat and allow them to cool down completely to a safe lukewarm temperature.
Test a stem by pressing it between your thumb and index finger; it should yield and mash easily before serving.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- ✕
Under-steaming the broccoli so that the stalks remain tough and hard, which can be difficult for a baby to break down.
- ✕
Over-steaming to the point where the entire floret turns to mush and falls apart completely before the baby can even pick it up.
🔄 Variations
Cheesy Touch: Dust the warm steamed florets with a tiny pinch of nutritional yeast or mild grated cheese for a savory flavor boost.
Olive Oil Drizzle: Toss the cooked florets in a tiny drop of extra virgin olive oil for added healthy fats and calories.
🧊 Storage
- 📦
Fridge: Store leftover steamed broccoli in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- 📦
Freezer: Can be frozen for up to 1 month, though the texture becomes quite soft upon thawing; best served fresh or lightly reheated.
💡 Chef Tips
The stem is the most important part for a 6-month-old baby, as they hold the stalk and nibble on the soft floret top. Leaving a good length of stem makes gripping much easier.
If your baby drops the florets because they are slippery, you can roll the wet stems lightly in fine baby oat cereal or hemp seeds for extra traction.
❓ FAQ
Why is broccoli great for BLW? The natural tree shape is uniquely ergonomic for babies who haven't yet developed a pincer grasp, allowing them to hold the thick stalk while eating the flower.
Will broccoli cause gas for my baby? Cruciferous vegetables can sometimes cause mild gas, which is normal as a baby's digestive system adapts to new foods. Offering it in moderate portions helps.
Should I remove the stalks? No! Keep the stalks attached—they are the exact part your baby will hold onto while exploring the food.
