👨🍳 Instructions
Cut the ripe avocado in half lengthwise and remove the pit.
Peel the skin off each half, or slice the avocado into wedges while still inside the skin and gently scoop them out using a spoon.
Slice the avocado into long, rectangular "fingers" roughly the size of an adult index finger.
**CRITICAL STEP:** Avocados are naturally very slippery. Roll each finger lightly in hemp hearts, ground flaxseed, or fine oat cereal to give your baby a firm, non-slip grip.
Serve immediately at room temperature.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- ✕
Selecting an unripe, hard avocado, which lacks flavor, has a tough texture, and is difficult for a baby to digest.
- ✕
Leaving the slippery skin or dark fibrous outer layer attached to the bottom of the pieces.
🔄 Variations
Sesame Dust: Roll the fingers in lightly toasted sesame seed powder for a nutty aroma and extra traction.
Citrus Kick: Squeeze a tiny hint of fresh lemon or lime juice over the fingers to prevent browning and add a mild tang.
🧊 Storage
- 📦
Fridge: Avocado turns brown quickly when exposed to air. It is best prepared fresh right before mealtime. If storing briefly, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface and keep refrigerated for up to a few hours.
- 📦
Freezer: Not recommended, as thawing completely alters the texture and structure of fresh avocado.
💡 Chef Tips
Choose an avocado that yields gently to firm pressure when squeezed, but is not mushy or bruised inside.
If your baby squeezes the avocado too tightly and it mashes in their hand, don't worry—this is a normal part of sensory exploration! You can pre-load a spoon or hand them another piece.
❓ FAQ
Why is avocado great for babies? It is rich in healthy fats, calories, and essential vitamins (E, K, and B-complex), which are vital for a baby's rapid growth and brain development.
How do I prevent it from slipping out of my baby's hands? Rolling the avocado fingers in hemp seeds, ground flax, or infant cereal creates an instant, safe grip layer.
Can my baby eat brown avocado? A slight discoloration is just oxidation and is harmless, though fresh green avocado is more appealing and tastier.
